“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” - Romans 12:2
What does renewing our mind actually mean?
For me, it meant changing behaviours and looking into past hurts with the help of Godly counsel. I felt now would be a great time for me to consider counselling. Often counselling is sought in response to a crisis situation (such as times when we feel overwhelmed by a particular event or situation). My objective for counselling was to identify things that I hadn’t previously had the capacity to deal with. I sought out a Christian counsellor as I wanted my counsellor to provide Godly counsel and intertwine scripture into the support they were giving me. When considering a counsellor James 3:17 comes to mind “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy”
My counsellor sets me projects with tasks to help me work on myself, my current project is the “diamond cleansing project”, essentially it’s me seeing myself as a beautiful diamond (you know the rarest type – of course), removing debris of the past layer by layer, gently acknowledging the who, what and why, whilst understanding my reactions, emotions and facing any “toxic traits” I’ve picked up misunderstanding them as “protection”. Letting down barriers, opening up and laying it all on the line doesn’t always come easy. Gradually with wise words, compassion and affection I’ve been able to see breakthroughs.
Psalm 147 helps us to recognise God’s care, provision and power, verse 3 tells us “He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds.” Personally, I believe that God often uses others as a vessel to offer advice, support and guidance in order to help heal our wounds.
From personal experience counselling is not an overnight transformation, it takes time, a willingness to trust your Counsellor and ultimately Christs Love. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Food for thought…
Are there areas in your life where you want to see breakthroughs? If so spend some time praying and seeking God, ask Him to equip you with the tools you require, and remember, be kind to yourself.
